A posse of brethren from the Province headed off to the sunny climate of Benidorm recently to enjoy the hospitality of the District of Spain, under the guise of undertaking foreign missionary work. The posse was lead by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Very Worshipful Brother John Clendinning, the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Brett Varker, the Past Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother Peter Balsom and the Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master and Grand Master Overseer, Very Worshipful Brother Bill Humphries. They were supported by Worshipful Brother Paul Howard-Baker, Grand Senior Deacon, and a further 10 brethren. The brethren were not unaccompanied, as many of them brought their wives and partners, so they could enjoy a social holiday or kept under control depending on the individual perspective.

During the early part of the week, some of the brethren and their partners, went out into the local area to enjoy some of the local sights and food. One such day out was to the Valencia football stadium, where our Deputy Provincial Grand Master was signed up to be a substitute in their next game.

On other days the group decided to enjoy the local food in Tapas Alley which was enjoyed by all.

The Friday evening consisted of a presentation given by Worshipful Brother Mike Neville, a former Detective Inspector within the Metropolitan Police and member of the Royal Military Police, which covered many aspects of how freemasonry and brethren themselves have been at the forefront of forensic science in relation to crime. Our own Assistant Provincial Grand Secretary, who had briefly served with the speaker during his early military days, managed to get the former Military colleagues together for a photograph the following day.

On the day of the meeting, the wives and partners went out on a day trip to a local vineyard which was followed by a lovely 3 course meal in a local restaurant.

Whilst the partners were away, over 400 brethren enjoyed a great District Grand Assembly meeting, which was followed by a spectacular 10 course festive board.

Once the daily activities had ceased, a number of the brethren were found to be crowded around the big screen, waiting to watch the England rugby match.

Following such a joyous week for all who attended, the brethren and partners made their weary way back to home shores, having enjoyed a wonderful time of friendship and socialising.
