The Worshipful Master of the Lewis Lodge of Mark Master Masons 1284, Worshipful Brother Mark Bowes-Cavanagh, together with his wife Claire, recently hosted their ladies night.

The event was held at the grand Hotel in Torquay, and saw 185 brethren and guests from across the province attending, including not only the Provincial Grand Master, together with his Deputy and Assistant joining them, but also the Provincial Grand Master from the Craft within Devonshire. The evening was enjoyed by all as they met, and enjoyed a sumptuous meal with the fun and friendship that becomes this wonderful degree.

The evening continued with a charity raffle and some live music in the form of an Abba Tribute band, with the brethren, guests and ladies enjoying the usual dancing and singing that goes with this theme. The charity draw raised approximately £2000.
However, it was at this point that an unexpected event took place, which could bear similarities to a piece of masonic ritual.
Whilst the dancing was taking place, a uninvited guest managed to gain entry to the hotel and seeing his opportunity, made off with the taking of the charity raffle. He was immediately pursued by the some of the more able and fitter members of the gathering, across the dark rugby fields into the night of Torquay. After a search of the area, including members of the Devon and Cornwall constabulary, they located the said individual hiding in a darkened corner, and was he subsequently arrested with sounds of lamentation. The Police, having apprehended their suspect, went on to find that he was still in possession of all of the charity collection, which they then returned to the hotel and to the brethren.
A positive end to a wonderful evening.
