Despite some sombre feelings surrounding the passing of our late Sovereign Queen Elizabeth ll, the accession to the Throne by King Charles lll, changes in the rulers of our order and the Appointments and Promotions in Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons the day was full of great conversation, camaraderie and a buoyant atmosphere prevailed.

Journeying to the Capital by many forms of transport, train, car and bus seemed to go quite well apart from a rail problem for some where an accident on the line (some stray sheep) caused a delay and rerouting meaning some of our party were delayed in getting to Grand Lodge but joined everyone for refreshments.

The meeting was also to celebrate 40 years of M.W.Bro. HRH the Duke of Kent G.V.C.O. as Grand Master. Understandably, he was unable to attend as he is in Court Mouning for HRH the Queen.  His place was filled by M.W.Bro. Raymond Smith who was to retire as Pro Grand Master at this meeting. Grand Lodge opened in ample form and stunning ceremony in processions and salutations. Prayer and silence was observed in memory of our late Sovreign Queen Elizabeth. Prayers were also offered for the King and his family at this sad time.

M.W.Bro. Raymond Smith, on behalf of the Grand Master, then appointed his successor M.W.Bro. John Herbert Prizeman as Pro Grand Master, R.W.Bro. Francis Spencer as Deputy Grand Master and finally R.W.Bro. Prof. Denovan Keith Wilson as Assistant Grand Master. Full salutations and the most glorious fanfares proclaimed them all in office. M.W.Bro. Smith then handed over the business of the meeting to M.W.Bro. John Herbert Prizeman.  The business of appointments and promotions was smoothly handled in a lovely ceremony.

We then retired for refreshment in the Grand Connaught rooms where an entertainment of a quintet played for us throughout the luncheon.  Many classic tunes were played ending with a proper Post Horn Gallop sequence expertly delivered much to the amusement and joy of the assembled mark masons. After many farewells to the many friends from around the country we all took our various routes back home.
