Worshipful Brother Donald Johans, of the Devon Mark Lodge 215, recently visited a local initiative near Widdicombe. As a result of the impression that they made on him during his visit, he made a proposal to the lodge for some charitable support.
The initiative, known as the East Swallowford Farm, enables children to come and stay, enabling them to benefit from not only the wonderful scenery of the moors, but also see and interact with the farm animals on view. The children travel from various parts of the country, with some coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their vision is that everyone, no matter where they are from, has an opportunity to engage with rural life and the environment, to challenge assumptions and form positive, responsible futures for themselves, their community and the environment.
Since 1976, many thousands of children and young people from all over the UK have benefitted from their time at Shallowford, and the experience has changed countless lives. Successive generations have returned again and again to a place they trust and love.
Following the last meeting of the lodge, Worshipful Brother Johans, who was accompanied by Worshipful Brother Keith Eddiford, revisited the charity, and had a charming time talking to the staff and some of the children who were staying there. After enjoying a small lunch with them, the brethren went on to present them with a cheque for £500. Pictured are the brethren with Anita Dowman, one of the charity Trustees and some of the children.
