This ‘stand in’ was rather appropriate in view of the evenings agenda as the Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. Peter Balsom, accompanied by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, V.W.Bro. David Purdie, the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. John Clendinning and a large entourage of members of the Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariner who had come to witness the presentation of a Jubilee Certificate to R.W.Bro. Peter Hawken marking 50 years membership and service to the order.
The PGM, having presented a similar certificate to R.W.Bro.Peter two nights previously at Hawton Mark Lodge No.100 meeting, the PGM said that at that meeting he had given a lengthy account of R.W.Bro. Peter’s highly distinguished career in all the degrees administered by Mark Masons Hall that R.W.Bro. Peter was a member and thought it would be nice for someone who knew him well to say a few words. He then asked W.Bro. John Clendinning if he would do the honours.
W.Bro. Clendinning took great delight in recalling many fond memories he had of personal family, work in the dockyard and of masonic incidents, where he had been guided by wise counselling of R.W.Bro. Peter. These stories brought much laughter to the meeting as it was clear that the healthy respect of dockyard workers from their different specialities towards each other continues.
In response R.W.Bro. Peter thanked everyone and recounted a few stories of his own and said that he held St Aubyn RAM with the fondest of memories as it was in this lodge when it was known as St Aubyn RAM No.64 that he was installed into the chair of Worshipful Commander Noah, which was the very first chair he took out of the all the degrees where he is a member (and there are lots!)
On completion of the meeting we retired to a very jovial festive board in the refectory.
