And so it began in the dark nights of the winter 2019 that Proms in the Park started to become a reality. A venue, now what do we fill it with and when? Well July the 13th was the decided day and with a lot of effort the organisation of 'Proms in the Park' took off. Acts to be booked, stages to be built, facilities arranged, food and drink, parking areas, camping area and how to work out not disrupting the ongoing activities of a working farm while you are doing all this 'other stuff'. Advertising and Selling Tickets were other considerations.
Our Provincial Grand Master, Rt.W.Bro. Peter Balsom, his Deputy V.W.Bro. David Purdie and the Assistant PGM V.WBro John Clendinning were on hand throughout the planning and were at the event on Saturday 13th with the Brethren, wives, families and friends of the Mark Masons of the Province to witness the culmination of all the hard work and planning.
Despite it being a bit overcast in the early part of the day and a little chilly with a breeze wafting across the fields eventually the sun arrived warming the crowds, we were treated to one of the best vistas seen in Devon, from Crediton down to Exmouth, a Stage kindly erected by Mr Dermot McGeogh featured against this wonderful backdrop. We were then royally entertained by the Rockin' Good Knights, Torridge Male Voice Choir, the Appledore Silver Band and Tamsin Ball singing many favourite songs from the shows. The choruses resounded around the hillsides as the audience all joined in!
All too soon it was coming to a close, though chilly and many of our venerable brethren had resorted to wrapping up in blankets (photos will show who), spirits were high for the finale and more choruses and as the last notes faded away into the ether we were treated to a firework display which echoed around the valleys and lit up the clear moonlight night sky.
The money raised by this event is going to the DMCA 2022 Celebration Project. R.W.Bro. Peter Balsom paid tribute to the Organisers W.Bros. Brain Martin (Compere) Brett Varker and his wife Angie, Paul Jones, Chris Sidwell, David Tucker and others in the DMST team for selling tickets.
